Aechmea fasciata is endemic to humid tropical forests of the southeastern Brazil (Rio de Janeiro and possibly Espírito Santo). It is an epiphyte growing in trees or sometimes on the ground. The silvery-green elliptic-oval leaves are 45-90 cm long, with spiny edges, and arranged in a basal rosette. The inflorescence is composed of densely packed small violet flowers surrounded by rosy bracts; the flowers change to red as they mature. Common ornamental plant.
